poker-p-2 (1)Poker is one of the popular card games in the world and one of the most common table games that you will find in casinos wherever your gambling adventures take you.

While there are several different variations of the game of poker, essentially it is a relatively simple game to learn – however mastering the game takes a fair bit of practice and quite a bit of skill.

Know when to fold ‘em

One of the factors that makes poker such a great casino game to play is that you are always playing against the other players – not against the house. This means that if you are playing to your full potential, then the only way that you will lose is if you don’t get the cards you need or if someone is playing better than you.

Even the best players won’t win every hand – you need to get the right cards – but your objective should always be to make the best possible decisions, the best possible play from the cards that you are dealt.

Know when to hold ‘em

The skills that you’re going to need to develop and practice as a poker player include: Calculating pot odds; recognising betting patters; bluffing; and using your table position. It is the application of these skills that set the good players apart from the average players – regardless of what cards have been dealt.

Know when to fold ‘em

Here’s a couple of practical game tips to help keep you focused.

  •  You don’t have to play every hand. If you don’t have a starting hand that meets your initial threshold or requirements then don’t play it. Don’t let your ego get in the way of your decisions – just because you want to be part of the action is no excuse for playing too many bad hands.
  • Decide what type of game you are playing. If you’re just out for a social night or playing with some buddies and you’re not worried too much about winning or losing, then you might have a few drinks, relax and enjoy yourself. If you’re playing seriously though you shouldn’t drink. Keep your head clear and ensure that you are making decisions that you won’t regret when you’re sober.
  • Don’t bluff for fun. Knowing how to bluff is a poker skill that you need to learn, but equally important is to learn when to bluff. This is something that should not be over-used and should only be used in certain circumstances.

Know when to walk away

When it comes to poker, one of the hardest things to master (but perhaps the most important) is your emotions. Good players will be looking for opportunities to use your emotions against you, seizing on any display of emotion as a weakness to be ruthlessly exploited. If you are in the middle of a game and you feel your emotions rising or potentially clouding your judgment then the only strategy is to exit the game as quickly as possible or stand to lose your entire stake.

Are you ready to take your seat at the table?
