Who are the world’s biggest poker players?

Man plays cards in casinoThe rise of online casinos and poker tournaments has meant an increased visibility in some of the big players in the world’s most popular casino card game.

While the major results are published, it can be a bit difficult to get a totally accurate picture on total winnings of each player. Plus, fortunes rise and fall – a winner today could easily be a loser tomorrow. So we’re not going to try and give you a definitive list or rank them one to ten.

In this article we take a look at some of our favourite poker players on the world scene – these are the people that you don’t want to be sitting down at a table with.

Scotty Nguyen

Nguyen has won just about every major poker tournament there is – including the World Series of Poker main event and the HORSE event, both of which have enormous prize pools.

TJ Cloutier

With at least sixty major poker tournament titles to his name, Cloutier has won at least $10 million in prize money.

Antonio Esfandiari

Estimated to have around $25 million winnings to date, Esfandiari’s biggest prize has probably been a 2012 tournament known as The Big One where he pocketed a cool $18.7 million. His nickname is The Magician. He lives in Las Vegas.

Kathy Liebert

One of the highest earning women on the world’s poker circuit, Liebert’s titles include the PartyPoker Million and the World Poker Tour.

Jennifer Harman

Harman was one of the stars during the early days of the online poker tournament boom – these days she seems to focus mainly on the big cash games in the casinos of Las Vegas.

Stu Ungar

Unbar died at a relatively young age as the result of a drug overdose, but he was on track to be one of the greatest poker players that the world has seen – winning three World Series of Poker main event tournaments.

Daniel Negreanu

With around $20 million in career earnings, Negreanu has won four World Series of Poker titles as well as two World Poker Tour titles. His nickname is Kid Poker. He lives in Las Vegas.

Phil Ivey

Ivey has been a phenomenally successful poker player – Eight World Series of Poker bracelets, a World Poker Tour title and consistently ranked as one of the games biggest earners.

Doyle Brunson

Brunson is old-school. One of the last of the road gamblers synonymous with the 1960s and 1970s. It’s people like Brunson that they make movies about. It’s people like Brunson that made poker cool, made it a game that people around the world want to play.

Phil Hellmuth

Hellmuth has 13 World Series of Poker titles, with wins both in Las Vegas and on the European circuit. It’s an incredible achievement and has resulted in some big wins.

Daniel Colman

Colman is from Massachusetts and specialises in Texas Hold’em. He is one of the rising stars of the poker tournament circuit.

There are some serious players on this list. Try keeping your poker face in place when one of these sits down at your table.
