BingoBingo has firmly lodged itself into becoming one of the favorite pastimes of people all across the modern world. Wherever you go, whomever you ask, you’ll find at least somebody, or somewhere, that knows about or enables you to play bingo.

Since the online age too, with things like free no deposit bingo becoming increasingly popular, bingo has become more famous too. Go to any online casino and you’ll usually find a plethora of bingo games offered in addition to all the regular casino staples you’d expect.

Outside of how to play the game though, how much do you actually know about bingo itself? Here we take a look at four interesting facts that you probably don’t know about this cultural stalwart.

The Birth of Bingo

According to historians, bingo was born somewhere in Europe, more specifically Italy, sometime in the 1500s when the Renaissance was in full swing and Leanardo Da Vinci was busy dreaming up and creating exciting new things. Eventually moving west to the UK and beyond, it became more popular at the beginning of the 1600s, with venues in Europe growing to accommodate a game that appealed not just to the upper classes but the poor too.

The origins of bingo can be traced back to an Italian lottery called Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia. Birthed out of that idea, the game wouldn’t take on its modern guise, especially in the form of online casinos, until many centuries later.

Bingo Cards

The modern day bingo card, that which is seen in bingo halls across the world, didn’t come into existence until last century when Erwin S. Lowe, a New York native, invented it in 1942. Coming out of the demand to make the game simpler and easy to follow, cards quickly spread through British bingo halls to rapidly grow into the most recognizable facet of the game today. Digital versions have taken things even a step further with automatic marking and interactivity.

Largest Bingo Prize Winner

The largest bingo prizewinner is believed to be a Welsh grandmother from Caerphilly named Christine Bradfield. According to reports, she was the lucky winner of 1.1 million pounds after taking part in a bingo game at The Castle Club in Welsh town Merthyr Tydfil.

The biggest online purse, on the other hand, is almost half that at 430,900 pounds. Not bad considering there are over 1.4 million different winning combinations on a standard bingo card.
Statistics

Some interesting statistics about bingo include the fact that 96% of regular players have won a jackpot prize at least once and that 80% of bingo players are women.

Elsewhere winning the jackpot ranks fifth in the reasons as to why players take part in bingo, with the number one reason being entertainment.

Online-wise there are some interesting statistics too. Most online players are between the ages of 35-40, about 48% of which admit to playing the game at least once a day as part of their daily habits. 83% of online players are also women and half of those suggest they were able to form a new group of friends thanks to chat features available on most online bingo sites.
